Big Fish - who we areThe Big Fish Youth Club, commonly referred to as ‘Youth’, meets once a week, at 6:30pm on Sundays, at Bidborough School. We all pay a £1 entry fee, which helps to fund our activities as well as a little Peruvian boy’s schooling. His name is Saul, and we await his regular letters with interest. Youth begins in the usual way, everyone arrives to the stereo blasting, and Mike, our leader, assisted by others, will try to grab our attention. And the evening will progress from there. We play every game you can think of. Rugby is big with the boys. Hide and Seek is a favourite, and many a person has made the mistake of trying to hide in the full rubbish bin rather than the empty one. Talks, trips, etcThere are also talks, (Caroline Fawcett agreed to chat to us about illegal substances - warning us off that is) music nights, and failed attempts at making smoothies with a juicer (Mike!) After this, we will discuss youth plans, covering weekends away, regular beach trips, and an update on the welfare of member Deborah Steele, currently working in Uganda. A progression of the Youth Group has been ‘Cell’, the Bible study group, with St. Peter's Church, Southborough. There was also a Cell group weekend away in June. Big Fish rounds off the evening with one last game, in which the piano inevitably will be hijacked, and everyone will beg Simon not to play the whole of the ‘Coldplay’ album, before the end. Fond farewells are exchanged, and the leaders go home to regain their strength. But what do we get out of it?What makes the difference between a load of teenagers meeting in a hall to kick about a football, and a youth group? Youth is the place where there is time to be among those who are close to you, and to get away from the hassles life inflicts. There is some beauty in holding Youth the night before school. In those few hours when a mind would have nothing better to do than dread the coming week, we always drive away the misery with laughter, and are then capable to think on Monday morning without wanting to scream. Big Fish Youth Group encourages Fellowship, Friendship, and Christianity. And to top it all, we get fun out of it. And for two hours on a Sunday night, that’s really the most important thing! |
